This is a rare opportunity to own a significant original illustration by Paul Hogarth from 1979. Using pencil, pen & ink, and ink wash, this art was 1 of only 6 pieces he created for the limited edition of. By George Bernard Shaw (1979). This particular piece was used to illustrate Saint Joan.

Boldly signed in the lower right, the image area measures 6 x 11 inches on larger Strathmore bristol and is in terrific condition. Yellowed tape that held a dustcover at top, but it is far from the art area.

You occasionally see Hogarth originals for salebut usually none this strong and finished from a published work (he obviously took his time as the publisher of this edition paid well). His artwork for book covers, interiors, and illustrationsnotably for friends such as authors Graham Greene and Brendan Behanwas incredibly influential spanning a long career from the 1950s to the 1990s. Hogarth was essentially the UK's version of Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast, or Ben Shahn in terms of being an artist's artist and very well-regarded. He was recipient of the OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) and was a full member of the Royal Academy. Hogarth's original artwork is highly collectible and widely held in museums, academic, and private collections.
