In 1922, he migrated to New York City in the hops of establishing himself as a legitimate illustrator. His initial formal training was at the Art Student League where he was instructed by such notable artists as: Harvey Dunn, Joseph Pennell, and George Bridgman. Opaque illustrations were often a favorite of Dwyer's, and he was partial to hunting and fishing scenes. James Dwyer died at the age of 75 in 1973. It also features several of his illustrations.
