JON WHITCOMB Signed Original Illustration VINTAGE GOUACHE PAINTING Illustrator
Based on the artistic style and medium (gouache), this illustration was likely created for a 1950's magazine, although I have not been able to identify the actual publication. The artwork has an image area of approximately 8.5" by 17" with a frame measuring approximately 13.5" by 24" and is signed in the lower right.

The artwork appears to be in fairly nice condition but has has some very small spots of soiling and light wear on the image and the outer edges of the board. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a beautiful original painting by one of America's most celebrated illustrators. Whitcomb was born in Weatherford, Oklahoma, grew up in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, attended Ohio Wesleyan and graduated from Ohio State University.

Whitcomb started drawing illustrations for student publications as a student at Ohio State, and worked summers painting posters for a theater in Cleveland, Ohio. After he graduated, Whitcomb found work making travel and theater posters and advertising illustrations. In 1934, he moved to New York City and joined Al Cooper to found the Cooper Studio. Whitcomb was a pioneer in the switch from oil paints to gouache as a media to create illustrations. The different qualities of gouache compared to oil led to changes in the design of Whitcomb's illustrations. He zoomed in on people, often pretty, young city women, and reduced the background to simple design elements. Whitcomb's artwork graced the pages of the country's most widely circulated national magazines including The Saturday Evening Post , Ladies' Home Journal, Collier's Weekly, McCall's, and Good Housekeeping. Whitcomb also had his own feature in Cosmopolitan Magazine called, On Location With Jon Whitcomb.

Whitcomb enjoying writing and created two children's books (Coco and Pom Pom's Christmas) and wrote a book on glamor called All About Girls. Whitcomb was also one of the founding members of the Famous Artists School, was one of twenty illustrators selected for the United States Postal Service's American Illustrators stamp series in 2001, and was the subject of the Daniel Zimmer's book, The Art of Jon Whitcomb. John Whitcomb was a true illustration legend and was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1973. And finally, please be sure to check out my other original art auctions!
